Danish BG Fund support enables exhibit to travel in USA

The exhibition Scandinavian Photography 2: Denmark opened at Faulconer Gallery of Grinnell College last summer. It is part of a series by Curator Daniel Strong featuring the contemporary photographic art of the Nordic region. This part of the series includes over 200 works by 39 Danish photographic artists young and old.

An opening reception September 19, 2006 at Scandinavia House in New York City, will present a selection of 80 works by 27 of the artists. The show now called "Foto: New Photography from Denmark" will run from September 20 thru November 11, 2006.

The exhibition is honored to have his Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik as the patron. Culture Minister Brian Mikkelsen wrote an introduction for the fully illustrated colour catalogue.

The Danish BG Fund has generously supported this project with funding enabling the exhibition to travel to other venues.

Daniel Strong got an introduction to the work through Andrew Daneman's efforts to present contemporary Danish art photography to international audiences at photographic art fairs in Paris, London, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Strong was unaware of the artistic production of the region and was immediately impressed by the quality, quantity and breadth of the work. He felt other lovers of photographic art would also and thus the exhibition was born.

Andrew Daneman states, "We are not trying to do the ultimate presentation of all Danish photographic art. We are hoping, rather, to give viewers a good idea of what a large variety of quality work is being produced and to encourage further investigation."

Andrew Daneman, 53, a 22-year resident of Denmark has had a 35-year career as a commercial photographer, independent curator, photography collector and artist. He has photographed for museums such as the Getty Museum, Norton Museum and LA County Museum, commercially for the UN, LEGO, Kelloggs, discovered the work of Danish postcard photographer Mary Willumsen which he presented at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in 1994 and helped create shows for Palle Fogtdal's "Fotocafe". Besides all these activities he has assembled the largest private collections of Danish historical photographs and American Tintypes.
